It's the third time that the Dutch gallery Marzee, in cooperation with a local museum, organized an exhibition entitled 'Jewellery, the choice of...'.The first two towns were Amersfoort and Nijmegen. Zwolle followed in March 1999. In this series of expositions modern jewellery takes stage; in each case twenty five women act as ambassadors for modern jewellery, an art form that deserves more attention than it has got in the past.

So it's jewellery first. But then the twenty five women from Arnhem came to visit Marzee, with a 25-fold selfconsciousness that can be somewhat intimidating. They said things like

Then they had their pictures taken by Arnhem photographer Ans Dekkers. She was keen on recording each woman's pride and powerful presence. As soon as she saw a glimpse of that she cried "Beautiful!", and let her camera click.

At the photo session nearly all the women wore clothes designed by a townswoman, Marta de Wit. Her designs served to enable the women and their jewellery to come out well. "We dressed them somewhat uniformly, hoping that the individuality of their personalities and their jewellery would stand out even more", says De Wit about her cooperation with Dekkers.

In this exposition, women and jewellery stand next to each other. Their clothes and photography add to this effect. At the end of their afternoon at Marzee, one of the participants, Soheila Najand, said she had enjoyed the event. "The dialogues that were underway in a matter of minutes... it was marvellous," and everybody agreed. Then she went on to tell something about her own choice - she felt for the idea that she could wear "the artist's spirit". Apart from her personal story it appears that during the preparations for the exposition, 'Jewellery, the choice of Arnhem', the spirits of women and designers sharpened each other. Hopefully this dialogue will extend to the public.
